Kamil Idris:Talking Tough On Intellectual Property Theft

Born Kamil Eltayeb Idris, Kamil Idris is a Sudanese scholar, statesman and an international civil servant. He is also the former director of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization). He recently wrote a post on how to make sense of today’s modern laws on intellectual property. He identified patents, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights as four critical forms of intellectual property. Professor Kamil Idris further noted that while there are laws made by national governments as well as larger institutions to grant businesses and people exclusive right to use something they have invented themselves, there are still many individuals and businesses making profits from selling products that aren’t originally theirs.

According to Professor Kamil Idris, the main objective for intellectual property laws is to enhance economic growth and encourage businesses and individuals to be creative in innovating new services, products, processes and ideas. He cited intellectual property theft as the underlying cause of trade war between China and the US.

During the World Intellectual property Day, Kamil Idris message was that the day was truly special for every nation since it helped highlight the need for developing new technologies in order to tackle universal problems created by intellectual property theft. This day according to the former Director General of WIPO offered an excellent opportunity for celebrating the incredible power of the human creativity. In addition, it helps advance intellectual property rights, which according to Kamil Idris makes intellectual property a crucial driving force for cultural, economic and social development.

Kamil explained the role of WIPO in enhancing the power of the human innovation and creativity, so that every person regardless of their nation can benefit immensely. World intellectual property day helps nation pay tribute to artists and inventors that enrich the world with their creative visions and innovative minds.

Kamil Idris was born in 1954, and is a graduate from Khartoum University with a Bachelor of Law. He also has a BA in Political Science and BA in philosophy from Cairo University. The professor graduated from Ohio University with Masters in International Law. He joined WPO in 1982, and was appointed the organization’s Director General in 2000. He was a member of International Law Commission. Kamil Idris is a globally acknowledged author who has written factual journals, books and articles on a wide array of topics ranging from trade to international law.
